Why The Water In Tampa Looks Green Today
If you see the water in the Hillsborough River near downtown looking a bit green today, there’s a reason. A good reason.
It’s been two years since the City of Tampa has celebrated with River O’ Green Fest. In preparation of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration, the city began testing this part of the day’s classic event.
Dying the river green is a tradition in many places. Tampa is doing so using a dye that the city said in a tweet is “It’s safe for the environment, non-toxic, biodegradable, meets all EPA standards and is certified for use by the National Sanitation Foundation Standard 60.”
You can see in the Tweets below that the test went well. River O’ Green Fest takes place on Saturday, March 12, at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.
The free event begins at 11 a.m. and runs through 5 p.m. There will be live entertainment, food and drinks, beer and family friendly activities. You can sign up for the Leprechaun Costume Contest (be prepared to give a contest-winning jig on the dance floor). There’s also a Family Scavenger Hunt, cabbage toss and corn-hole toss.
Fun fact: did you know the dye used for River O’Green is the same dye used in eye surgeries? 👀 💚
