Hillsborough County Theft Ring Stole $60,000 Worth Of Gas
Hillsborough County deputies identified seven involved with the theft of gas from Circle K stations.
Sheriff Chad Chronister announced Operation Empty Tank, an investigation that began on February 25, 2022. It has culminated in the arrest of six of seven people identified following an investigation of gas thefts. Two Circle K Gas Stations, located at 3702 Highway 41 in Ruskin and 5004 Highway 41 in Apollo Beach, reported discrepancies in the fuel supplies at their pumps. Deputies checked surveillance videos and found what they needed.
Multiple trucks stopped at two Circle K gas stations. They removed devices used to keep track of the amount of gas pumped, replaced them with false ones, and pumped containers with fuel. The gas was then taken to two locations where the fuel was sold for less than gas stations are charging.
The Sheriff, during his presentation, said thieves stole close to $60,000 worth of fuel. Of the seven suspects identified, six have been arrested. One is believed to have fled the country. Charges for each suspect include: Racketeering (RICO), Conspiracy to Commit RICO, Grand Theft, and Accessing Electronics Without Authority.
Sheriff Chronister pointed out that the losses by the company whose fuel was stolen will need to make up those losses. That would likely be by charging the consumers. He also believes that this isn’t the only area that has been victimized by this crime.
