Riverview Gas Station Selling Plus Cheaper than Regular Unleaded
I thought for sure it was just a mistake. Maybe not?
After last night’s Tampa Bay Lightning game, I drove over to one of my favorite spots for Chinese food near Brandon. Noticing my tank was getting pretty low, I wanted to fill up before the drive back over to Pinellas. I was pretty happy to see prices at stations along Highway 301 under $4. I noticed a Circle K coming up on my right and pulled in. They were doing the 10 cents per gallon discount if you paid in cash. But I rarely carry cash so I got the plastic out. That’s when I saw this. 89 octane gas was CHEAPER than the 87.
It was a long day. I stared at the two prices for a good 30 seconds thinking maybe I’m just that exhausted. The radio show. The Rays game. The Lightning game. The hangover of some great Chinese food. Maybe I’m just loopy and out of it I thought. Nope. It was for real. 87 Unleaded was $3.98 and Plus was $3.89. So I filled up with the 89. After I whipped out my calculator on my phone to do the math to make sure I was actually charged $3.89 a gallon. Yup. Sure enough. I was only charged $3.89.
Turns out it might not have been a mistake. One theory that some listeners had is that since everyone is buying the cheap stuff since the gas prices spike during the Ukraine situation, maybe there was too much 89 octane supply. Or it may have been that they were running low on 87 and wanted to not go dry. Another listener mentioned this is common in the Midwest because there, 87 octane often has no ethanol. One listener said she’s seen this often near the stations surrounding Legoland.
This was at the Circle K location on Highway 301 in Riverview near the entrance to the Selmon Expressway. One listener said a Circle K in Land O’Lakes had the same situation. Have you seen midgrade gas cheaper than basic unleaded? Tweet where you saw it at @GenoRadio and I’ll include it below.
