Here’s a video of the moment lightning strikes a boat in the Gulf of Mexico. The Coast Guard came in to rescue the 7 boaters aboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard posted the video of the rescue. In the first part of the video you see the moment the lightning strike happens. The lightning strike hit the 39-foot boat about 100 miles off Clearwater.

The boaters then activated their Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB). The boat was involved in a fishing tournament.

After the strike, the video shows the seven boaters being hoisted into a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter In a statement, Coast Guard pilot Lt. David McKinley said:

“Lightning storms are routinely encountered in the Florida maritime environment and can pose a significant hazard to boaters. Fortunately, the boaters in this case were well prepared with all necessary safety equipment including an EPIRB, flares, and a marine VHF radio to ensure a quick and efficient rescue.”
