Whitney Houston’s performance of The Star Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 in Tampa is iconic. The performance is featured just as prominently as her Q105 pop hits in the new film “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” that hits theaters December 21. The movie is by the same writer for that Queen movie “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Take a peek.
English actress Naomi Ackie plays Whitney. She told People Magazine that it was definitely intimidating to play Whitney, saying “She’s been elevated in my life for so long that it felt like an impossible thing to achieve at times.”
Tampa Bay Lightning national anthem singer Sonya Bryson-Kirksey says Whitney’s anthem performance was powerful, saying “She didn’t just sing it, she performed it and you knew she meant every word.” Sonya says Whitney’s renditions plays in her head from time to time and she’s borrowed a few things from it. She says there are a handful of anthem performances on that level like Mariah Carey, Beyonce, and Jennifer Hudson – but Whitney’s ranks at the top of her list. Kane Brown, LoCash and Adele are some modern-day performers Sonya would like to see tackle “The Star Spangled Banner” next. [Source: People]
