(Photo by Brandon Bell/Getty Images)No it's not your imagination that's causing your grocery bill to rise. While shopping at Publix we almost fainted when we saw this price of an every day item. According to a recent study by Instacart, an online grocery delivery service, Tampa Bay ranks Third highest egg prices in the country. According to Creative Loafing, shoppers in the Tampa Bay area are expected to pay an average of $6.27 for a dozen eggs. This is an 18% increase from last year. Tampa Bay is tied with San Francisco for price tag on eggs. Another Florida city is coughing up even more, Miami is expected to pay $6.67 for a dozen eggs.
Unless you're a baker or eat a very high protein diet, eggs usually aren't that essential to everyday meals. Normally, we'd be reporting about a supply chain issue that's causing these prices to sky rocket. But there's another reason behind these crazy eggs costs, and it's not inflation either. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, bird flu outbreaks is what's causing the increase in prices. According to the CDC, more than 49 million birds in 46 states have died as a result of the bird flu since early 2022. And, according to the CDC, the virus doesn’t present a high risk to people. However, it's very contagious among birds and even other pets.
Instacart looked at all purchases of one dozen eggs in the month of December 2022 to calculate the average per state. They found that Hawaii has the highest cost per dozen eggs at $9.73 a carton. Missouri has the lowest cost per dozen eggs at $4.24 a carton.
Top 5 States Spending The Most On One Dozen Eggs:
- Hawaii - $9.73 average
- Florida - $6.36 average
- Alabama - $6.12 average
- Nevada - $6.07 average
- California - $6.05 average

9 Tasty Mocktails In The Tampa Bay Area And Where To Find Them
We like to party here in Tampa Bay, but some people have sworn off the hootch for Dry January or trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Conveniently, the mocktail trend has been steadily growing in the area. Whether you're practicing Dry January or have sworn off alcohol for good, multiple Tampa area bars are catering to everyone and including alcohol-free cocktails on their menu. We went to Yelp to see where the best Mocktails are in the Tampa Bay area and came up with a solid list that included a couple of our favorites that didn't make Yelp's list.
These drinks are tasty for anyone to order! Maybe you want to join in for an Instagram shot. Or let your kid feel like an adult with a "sophisticated" but fun beverage. One thing to look out for when ordering mocktails is the ingredient "Seedlip." According to the Tampa Bay Times, Seedlip is known to be “the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit.” You'll find it as the base ingredient for a lot of these mocktails. A lot of other local restaurants will disguise the drinks on their menu as "Zero-proof" or "spirit-free."
What are some benefits of Mocktails and Dry January?
There are many reasons to abstain from alcohol, even if it's just for 30 days! Research shows that even a small break from alcohol can help improve weight loss, sleeping habits, improved mood and energy levels, and even healthier skin. The most obvious benefit is to your wallet. Not going out and spending $40+ on bar tabs can add up to savings. Some people do say that a challenge that comes from Dry January is they tend to eat more sweets in replacement of the alcohol.
Note that some of these places might change their menu depending on the season. Be sure to check out their website for more info!
