The Complicated Relationship I have With The “Creamsicle” Uniforms
Two years ago the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they were going to bring back their Creamsicle uniforms. The classic ones that they wore from the teams inaugural season to the mid 90’s.
Because of supply chain issues they could not do it last year. which personally is a bummer, because I’d love to have seen Brady wearing ole “Bucco Bruce” on the side of his helmet. This season will be the first season in over a decade that the orange and white will take the field in Tampa.
A few weeks ago the Buccaneers announced that they will wear their orange jerseys on week six versus the Detroit Lions. On July 12th the Buccaneers dropped a hype video showing off the new-old threads.
I have to admit every time I see the orange jerseys the first player I think of is the legendary Lee Roy Selmon, the first NFL Hall of Famer from Tampa Bay. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Selmon on several occasions, every time he was a kind and gracious man completely unlike the ferocious football player he was on the field.
Nostalgia is a funny thing. Sometimes we forget that the good old days weren’t all that good. I don’t think anything epitomizes that better than seeing the Creamsicle uniforms. If I am speaking honestly, the Buccaneers were a terrible team when they wore those orange uniforms.
Yes, they had some early success, but their first season they went winless. They almost lost every game their second season too. Then they proceeded to have a 15 year playoff drought with a lot of bad football while wearing those orange uniforms.
But everything is different now. The Buccaneers have won two Super Bowls. Several players have made it to the Hall of Fame Tom Brady, the greatest football player ever played on the Buc’s field for three years. But let’s not forget those Creamsicle uniforms are the definition of below average performance and general failure to meet expectations.
It’s only fitting that they’re wearing those uniforms this year against the Detroit Lions. A team they faced twice every year being a member of the NFC Central. Good luck to the Buccaneers this year. It’s a new season, some say rebuilding, I say reloading, and while everybody will be excited to see the orange uniforms on the field again, don’t get caught in the curse that they represent.
If you guys win one game this year, let it be week six.
