That's not a typo. Rents across Tampa Bay have skyrocketed over the past decade. So when you see the headline about apartments in St. Petersburg going for under $400, I'm sure you were as skeptical as I was. The apartments are not ready yet, but they're coming soon.

Rates

Channel 10 says affordable housing help is on the way for those who need it. They're not ready yet but according to the report, dozens of apartments with a monthly rent starting at $358 are on the way. 66 units to be exact. It'll be mixed income housing. The report says rents will range from $358 for a one bedroom place up to around $1800 for a 3 bedroom apartment. The group behind the project Blue Sky Communities is already managing affordable housing in Tampa. According to their Facebook, the Grand Opening of Uptown Sky, 61 units of affordable housing on Fletcher Ave. in Hillsborough County was held last summer.

Expansion

This St. Pete affordable housing project apparently isn't a completely new project. It's considered an expansion of the Skyway Lofts. Right now it's just a pile of dirt as you'll see in the video above. But work on the $26 million project is underway. When it's done, if you're one of the lucky ones who can snag the deal, your rent will be about 1/4 of what most pay in St. Pete right now.

Rent Comparison to Other Cities

Rents in Florida still are more affordable than other big cities around the U.S. According to rent.com, a 1 bedroom place in New York City right now is going for over $4,300 a month. In Los Angeles, that same 1 bedroom place would run you about $3,200 a month. Here in Florida, Miami one bedroom apartments average around $2,535. Tampa area renters are paying average $1500 a month for that 1BR. [Sources: Channel 10, Rent.com]
