The impact of the government shutdown hit Tampa Bay hard this weekend, as more than 300 new people sought aid at local food banks. Workers missed their first full paycheck on Oct. 24, pushing many to seek help for the first time.

"We've added extra hours, we've added extra staff, we've added extra volunteers because thousands right now are impacted," said Shannon Oliviero, according to WFLA.

A new program now runs on Fridays and Saturdays. It includes a special hotline and web page with food aid and support services. The setup makes getting help simple and quick.

Thomas Mantz, Feeding Tampa Bay President and CEO, spoke about their long-term plans. "Folks are going to be without income for some time. They don't get paid the day they get a paycheck. That will take some time as well. So, we'll make sure there's care after this," Mantz said, according to FOX 13.

November 1 brings a new test. SNAP benefits might stop then. This puts 250,000 homes at risk across ten counties in the service area.

The site works like a store. Fresh food and ready meals fill the shelves. Staff set up private times for each person who needs help. Before this crisis, they'd given out 100 million meals this year. Each dollar turns into five meals for those in need.
