NEW YORK, NY - DECEMBER 27: Workers with LandmarkSigns install 192 new Waterford Crystal triangles featuring this year's "Gift of Goodwiil" design on the Times Square Ball for New Years on December 27, 2019 in New York City. The first New Year's ball made its descent from the flagpole atop One Times Square in 1907. Seven versions of the ball have since signaled the beginning of the new year with the most recent version weighing nearly six tons and measures twelve feet in diameter.

It’s cool to see this so close up! I have always said I’m going to do this some year. One year some friends and I were in NYC. We walked through Times Square sometime around 3 or 4pm. There wasn’t much of a crowd yet so we went back to our hotel room to warm up and use the bathroom one last time for the year! (Those rumors about there being no bathrooms is 100% true.) About an hour later, we went back to get a spot and the police had already blocked off crowds about 3 or 4 blocks away. We could see Times Square from a distance, but by 6:30pm, we just gave up and ended up watching the ball drop from a TGI Fridays around the block… that was charging a $25 cover! Anyway, I’ll be spending New Year’s Eve this year here in toasty Florida. But maybe one day…
