There will be multiple Florida sales tax holidays in 2022, covering a wide range of products over the next year. These tax breaks will help Floridians save money.
It’s not just back-to-school supplies. There are far more items that will have a tax holiday in 2022.
You might plan some purchases over the next year, particularly on some larger purchases. Included in the new law are tax breaks on impact-resistant doors and windows, qualifying ENERGY STAR appliances and even tools. Clothes for back-to-school, school supplies, children’s clothes, books and diapers are also taken care of in 2022. Oh, and let’s not forget the tax break on gas coming in October.
Here’s a list of the 2022 Florida sales tax holidays.
Back-to-School Tax Holiday
The Back-to-School Tax Holiday runs from July 25, 2022 through August 7, 2022
Covered items include:
- Clothing, wallets or bags, including handbags, backpacks, fanny packs and diaper bags (excluding briefcases, suitcases or other garment bags) with a sales prices of $100 or less per item. Clothing refers to any article of wearing apparel, but excluding watches, wristbands, jewelry, umbrellas and handkerchiefs, and footwear, excluding skis, swim fins, roller blades and skates.
- School supplies with a price of $50 or less per item. School items includes pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, notebooks, notebook filler paper, legal pads, binders, lunch boxes, construction paper, markers, folders, poster board, composition books, poster paper, scissors, cellophane tape, glue or paste, rulers, computer disks, staplers and staples used to secure paper products, protractors, compasses and calculators.
- Learning aides and jigsaw puzzles having a sales price of $30 or less. Learning aids includes flashcards or other learning cards, matching or other memory games, puzzle books and search-and-find books, interactive or electronic books and toys intended to teach reading or math skills and stacking or nesting blocks or sets.
- Personal computers or personal computer-related accessories for non-commercial home or personal use with a sales price of $1,500 or less.
This includes electronic book readers, laptops, desktops, handhelds, tablets or tower computers. This does not include cellular phones, video game consoles, digital media receivers or devices not primarily designed to process data. - Personal computer-related accessories” includes keyboards, mice, personal data assistants, monitors, other peripheral devices, modems, routers and non-recreational software. This does not include furniture or systems, devices, software, monitors with a television tuner or peripherals that are designed or intended primarily for recreational use.
These tax exemptions do not apply to sales tax in a theme park or entertainment complex.
Hurricane Preparedness Tax Holiday
Officially called the “Disaster Preparedness Supplies” Tax Holiday, it will run from May 28, 2022 through June 10, 2022.
Tax-free items include:
- Portable self-powered light sources selling for $40 or less
- Portable self-powered radio, two-way radio or weather-band radios selling for $50 or less
- A tarpaulin or other flexible waterproof sheeting selling for $100 or less
- Ground anchor system or tie-down kit selling for $100 or less
- Gas or diesel fuel tanks selling for $50 or less
- Packages of AA-cell, AAA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt or 9-volt batteries selling for $50 or less (excludes automobile and boat batteries)
- Non-electric food storage coolers selling for $60 or less
- Portable generator for light or communications or to preserve food in event of power outage selling for $1,000 or less
- Reusable ice packs selling for $20 or less
- Portable power bank selling for $60 or less
- Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors or fire extinguishers, each selling for $70 or less
- Supplies necessary for evacuation of pets (non-commercial): portable kennels or pet carriers selling for $100 or less per item, bags of dry pet food weighing 15 or fewer pounds and selling for $30 or less per item, cans or pouches of wet pet food selling for $2 or less per can or pouch or equivalent if sold in a box or case, manual can openers selling for $15 or less per item, leashes, collars and muzzles selling for $20 or less per item, collapsible or travel sized for or water bowls selling for $15 or less per item, cat litter weighing 25 or fewer pounds and selling for $25 or less per item, cat litter pans selling for $15 or less per item, pet waste disposal bags selling for $15 or less per package, pet pads selling for $20 or less per box or package, hamster or rabbit substrate selling for $15 or less per package, pet beds selling for $40 or less per item.
Freedom Week Tax Holiday
The Freedom Week Tax Holiday runs from July 1, 2022 through July 7, 2022
Taxes will not be collected on purchases of:
- Live music events scheduled to be held on any date or dates from July 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022
- Live sporting events scheduled to be held on any date or dates from July 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022.
- Movies to be shown in a theatre on any date or dates from July 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022.
- Entry into a museum, including any annual passes
- Entry into a state park, including any annual passes
- Entry to a ballet, play or musical theatre performance, scheduled to be held on any date from July 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022
- Season tickets for ballets, plays, music events, or musical theatre performances
- Entry to a fair, festival, or cultural event scheduled to be held on any date or dates from July 1, 2022, through December 31, 2022
- Use of or access to private and membership clubs providing physical fitness facilities from July 1, 2022, through December 31, 2022.
- The retail sale of boating and water activity supplies, camping supplies, fishing supplies, general outdoor supplies, residential pool supplies, and sporting equipment.
As used in this section, - 1. the term “Boating and water activity supplies” means the first $75 of the sales price of life jackets and coolers; the first $35 of the sales price of recreational pool tubes, pool floats, inflatable chairs, and pool toys; the first $50 of the sales price of safety flares; the first $150 of the sales price of water skis, wakeboards, kneeboards, and recreational inflatable water tubes or floats capable of being towed; the first $300 of the sales price of paddleboards and surfboards; the first $500 of the sales price of canoes and kayaks; the first $75 of the sales price of paddles and oars; and the first $25 of the sales price of snorkels, goggles, and swimming masks.
- 2. “Camping supplies” means the first $200 of the sales price of tents; the first $50 of the sales price of sleeping bags, portable hammocks, camping stoves, and collapsible camping chairs; and the first $30 of the sales price of camping lanterns and flashlights.
- 3. “Fishing supplies” means the first $75 of the sales price of rods and reels, if sold individually, or the first $150 of the sales price if sold as a set; the first $30 of the sales price of tackle boxes or bags; and the first $5 of the sale price of bait or fishing tackle, if sold individually, or the first $10 of the sales price if multiple items are sold together. The term does not include supplies used for commercial fishing purposes.
- 4. “General outdoor supplies” means the first $15 of the sales price of sunscreen or insect repellent; the first $100 of the sales price of sunglasses; the first $200 of the sales price of binoculars; the first $30 of the sales price of water bottles; the first $50 of the sales price of hydration packs; the first $250 of the sales price of outdoor gas or charcoal grills; the first $50 of the sales price of bicycle helmets; and the first $250 of the sales price of bicycles.
- 5. “Residential pool supplies” means the first $100 of the sales price of individual residential pool and spa replacement parts, nets, filters, lights, and covers; and the first $150 of the combined sales price of all residential pool and spa chemicals purchased by an individual.
- 6. “Sports equipment” means any item used in individual or team sports, not including clothing or footwear, selling for $40 or less per item.
The exemptions in this section do not apply to sames within a theme park or entertainment complex.
Tool Time Sales Tax Holiday
This tax holiday is from September 3, 2022 through September 9, 2022, and is to help for tools used by skilled workers
Items included in this section include:
- Hand tools selling for $50 or less per item.
- Power tools selling for $300 or less per item.
- Power tool batteries selling for $150 or less per item.
- Work gloves selling for $25 or less per pair.
- Safety glasses selling for $50 or less per pair, or the equivalent if sold in sets of more than one pair.
- Protective coveralls selling for $50 or less per item.
- Work boots selling for $175 or less per pair.
- Tool belts selling for $100 or less per item.
- Duffel bags or tote bags selling for $50 or less per item.
- Tool boxes selling for $75 or less per item.
- Tool boxes for vehicles selling for $300 or less per item.
- Industry textbooks and code books selling for $125 or less per item.
- Electrical voltage and testing equipment selling for $100 or less per item.
- LED flashlights selling for $50 or less per item.
- Shop lights selling for $100 or less per item.
- Handheld pipe cutters, drain opening tools, and plumbing inspection equipment selling for $150 or less per item.
- The tax exemptions provided in this section do not apply to sales within a theme park or entertainment complex or within a public lodging establishment
Florida Motor Fuel Tax Relief Act of 2022
The motor fuel tax holiday will take place from October 1, 2022 through October 31, 2022
State taxes on motor fuel will be reduced by about 25 cents per gallon.
Children's Books Tax Holiday
This tax break on the retail sales of children’s books runs from May 14, 2022 through August 14, 2022
For the purposes of this tax holiday, ‘children’s books’ means any fiction or nonfiction book primarily intended for children age 12 or younger, including any board book, picture book, beginning reader book, juvenile chapter book, or middle grade book. It does not include books intended for, or primarily marketed to, adults.
Energy Star Appliance Tax Holiday
This tax break on new appliances designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as ‘ENERGY STAR’ appliances runs from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.
This is for appliances intended for non-commercial use.
Appliances included are:- A washing machine selling for $1,500 or less;
- A clothes dryer selling for $1,500 or less;
- A water heater selling for $1,500 or less; or
- A refrigerator or combination refrigerator/freezer selling for $3,000 or less
Children's Diapers Tax Holiday
This tax holiday runs from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023
Taxes may not be collected on the retail sale of children’s diapers, including single-use diapers, reusable diapers, and reusable diaper inserts.
Baby Clothes Tax Holiday
Aligning with the children’s diapers tax holiday is the Baby Clothes Tax Holiday, running from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.
Taxes may not be collected on the retail sale of baby and toddler clothing, apparel, and shoes, primarily intended for children age 5 or younger. The terms “clothing” and “apparel” exclude watches, watchbands, jewelry, umbrellas, and handkerchiefs.
Windows and Doors Tax Holiday
Taxes on retail sale of impact resistant windows, impact-resistant doors and impact resistant garage doors may not be collected during the period from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2024.
