Are we rude in the Sunshine State? Are Floridians rude, in general?
When I think of rudeness, I immediately think of sports teams' fans. I think of Philadelphia Eagles fans. Rude Boston fans visiting Trop. That's when I think about various places producing rude people. I feel like fans of Florida teams are not quite to the top tier of rudeness.
A recent report analyzed rudeness among the states, or rather politeness. So logic dictates that those states that came in at the bottom of the list are the least polite and therefore, the rudest.
WordFinder did their analysis online. We know people can act rudely online, whether they are writing snarky comments on an article or are taking part in a nasty social media back-and-forth. This study went a different route. They looked for search terms by state and compared how often "polite" search terms were used in each state per 100,000 residents.
These terms were: Beg your pardon, Excuse me, Please, Thanks, Cheers, Friendly, Pretty please, Thanks so much, Civil, Gracious, Sir, Thoughtful, Cordial, Pardon me, Sociable, and Well-behaved.
Montana was crowned the most polite state. Residents searched polite terms more often in Montana than in any other state. When I think of Montana I think of Yellowstone. Are they particularly polite on that show? I don't think so.
California earned least polite honors (or dishonors). Kansas and Illinois also did poorly. And our home state, Florida was the ninth least polite (essentially rudest). Another reason I take issue with this study is because I think that when you analyze Floirda culture, you really have to look at its different regions. Think about how different people are in South Florida, Central Florida and the Panhandle. You really need to break Florida into three parts to do a fair assessment.
