Andre Braugher: ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Actor Dies at 61
Andre Braugher, who was best known for his roles in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Homicide: Life On The Street and more, has died. He was 61.
His publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed his death to Variety. According to Deadline, he succumbed to a short-lived illness that has not been disclosed at this time.
Braugher was born in Chicago and graduated from Stanford University. He later studied at Juilliard School in the drama division.
His career began with the 1989 Oscar-winning film Glory, which told the story of Black U.S. soldiers fighting for their freedom from slavery during the Civil War. He starred alongside Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. Braugher played a Union soldier in the film.
Later in his career, he starred Homicide: Life On The Street , which propelled him into the spotlight. He starred as Detective Frank Pembleton in the show which he starred in for six years (1992-98). He won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series in 1998 for his role. He was previously nominated in 1996. He also met his wife, Ami Brabson, who also starred on the show.
A more recent prominent role for Braugher was the hit comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He starred alongside Andy Samberg and Terry Crews for eight seasons. He portrayed the role of Captain Ray Holt in the series. Braugher won two Critics Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and received four Emmy Award nominations. Crews posted to Instagram, “Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. Deepest condolences to your wife and family in this difficult time. You showed me what a life well lived looks like. Rest In Peace, Andre. I love you, man.”
One of his last roles was the sixth and final season of Paramount+’s The Good Fight. The legal drama starred Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, Cush Jumbo and Sarah Steele.
Braugher was set to star in the Netflix show Residence as his next project, according to Deadline. The filming for the show was supposed to start next year.
