Julian Lennon: ‘Get Back’ Doc Made Him ‘Fall In Love’ With His Dad Again
Julian Lennon found a unique depth in the Peter Jackson documentary The Beatles: Get Back that only he could find. The acclaimed three-part documentary delved into the making of Let It Be. Within the footage of Get Back, Julian said it reminded him “of the way Dad used to be.”
Julian said of his late father, John Lennon, in an interview with Yahoo! Music, “You know, when we were together, when I was a kid, he was funny, goofy, sarcastic, talented, moody, broody — but fun.”
He added, “And that was all the things that he was to me when we lived together. And it made me fall in love with him again, which was really lovely. It made me appreciate him again and reminded me of how he was before everything went a bit pear-shaped.”
Julian and John were estranged for a number of years after John divorced Julian’s mother, Cynthia, and married Yoko Ono. Julian would reconnect with his father before his tragic murder in 1980. He said of that reconnection, “Certainly we tried to embrace each other’s company and tried to learn about each other again before he passed. And it was enjoyable experience. It was great. And I was longing to hang out with him even more, but you know, sadly what happened, happened.”
Julian said, “… So, [Get Back] was just a way of remembering who he was and seeing the human side of him again. And that inspired me, and I loved that.”
The Beatles: Get Back is nominated for five Emmy Awards including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. The Emmy Awards ceremony airs live on Monday, September 12 at 8 PM ET live on NBC and streams live on Peacock.
