What is better than heading to the beach or the pool with a good book? It has quickly become one of my favorite things to do in the warm summer months.

I was never a big reader. My mother, the librarian, would have loved me to be but I relied on Cliffs Notes through most of my schooling. In my entire life before last year, I read three books cover to cover (sorry to all my English teachers).

Yes, these books are non-fiction titles and not retelling of true crime cases, but I think you will still enjoy them. You will love these if you like a good mystery and lots of twists and turns.

  • Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter

I just finished this book. It took me 5 days to read it – I couldn’t put it down. So many twists and surprises. It took only 25 pages for the first surprise to pull me in. This author is also the writer of the Will Trent series of books, which is also a popular show on ABC.

  • Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra

This was the 2024 Jimmy Fallon Book Club choice. I listened to the audiobook for this one, and it was fantastic. The narrator did such a great job making you feel the intensity of the words on the page. I may have been gripping my steering wheel extra tight on 76 driving home from work.

  • House Maid by Freida McFadden

I love this author. These are really easy reads, but they do not lack mystery. Every page turn keeps you guessing. There are so many books by this author it will keep you reading for years. The second book in this series, The Housemaid’s Secret is worth reading, too. PS, these also make great gifts!

  • Perfect Couple by Elin HIlder

This book is not only steamy but it is also riddled with family conflict and drama. (It’s nice when it’s not your family conflict of drama.) Nicole Kidman is starring in the Netflix movie based on the book and I can’t wait to see it. But you know what they say, the book is always better than the movie.

  • Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

If you are into all of the imagery and themes of Día de Muertos, you’ll love this book. It is a sister’s journey to help her cousin who is living on a creepy property with her husband. So many interesting characters from the sinister husband to family members both alive and dead.
