Bill Seeks to Send New Mothers Who Give Birth To Drug-Addicted Babies to Prison
While a number of states have laws that penalize illegal drug suppliers more than users, a bill introduced in Tennessee aims to take the concept to a new level.
House Bill 1168, introduced Wednesday, calls for women who give birth to drug addicted babies to be prosecuted for assault. The proposed law allows women who enroll in a drug treatment program before giving birth — and successfully complete it — to use their recovery as a defense.
If passed, the new law will go into effect on July 1.
Do you think other states should follow Tennessee’s lead?
