Rich Zelasco of Pontiac Michigan had been separated from his wife for two years when he hit the windfall.
Zelasko was in the middle of his divorce when he bought the lucky Mega Millions ticket worth $30 Million. His ex immediately told the press that she hoped he would do the right thing, meaning split it with her. Mary Zelasko took it to court looking for her share.
The Attorney for Rich Zelasko argued that it was Rich’s luck, not his wife Mary’s that won the lottery.
An Appeals court ruled that the marriage isn’t over until it’s over and married couples must split their property when they get divorced.
So Mary Zelasco looks to walk with half the fortune.
