People Share The Most Useless Things They’ve Memorized
Throughout our lives, we sometimes have to remember little bits of information. Some of these things are helpful, while others just stick in our brains for no good reason. Someone on Reddit asked, “What’s the most useless thing you still remember?” As you can imagine, there were lots of answers, and some of them were pretty interesting.
Phone numbers have a sneaky way of sticking in our brains forever. Whether it’s your childhood landline number or the digits you dialed to chat with friends, they tend to linger. One person on the thread shared their memory of “old phone numbers that don’t exist anymore.”
Growing up, we often memorize the birthdays of our school friends from elementary, middle, and high school. While it’s a sweet gesture, this info becomes pretty pointless once everyone graduates and drifts apart. A Reddit user vented, “It’s really annoying. I look at the calendar and I’m like – oh today it’s his/her birthday. And I haven’t spoken to these people for years now.”
One person mentioned a theme song that many of us are familiar with. “For me, it’s the theme song lyrics to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” I haven’t watched the show in years, but I can still recite every word perfectly.” They continued, “It’s completely useless in my day-to-day life, but it always comes in handy for some nostalgic fun or when someone randomly starts singing it.”
If you were a math whiz back in school, you might have aimed to memorize as many equations as possible, maybe for a project grade or just to impress your classmates. Interestingly, several people mentioned some sort of math equation they memorized back in the day. A Reddit user recalled the “quadratic formula.” And before you ask, no, I don’t know how and when that would be used.
And then there’s that jingle, 1-877-KARS-4-KIDS. Sure, it’s catchy, but do you really need to remember it? If an old company’s jingle is still stuck in your head, thank their marketing team. Other jingles that were brought up in the thread include classics like “JG Wentworth: 877-CASH-NOW,” “It’s my money, and I need it now!” and Mentos “Fresh and full of life!”
Other “useless” things people still remember includes video game cheat codes, random facts like “Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell,” and the spell to summon Captain Planet.
