Ruth Bader Ginsburg Has Passed Away

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, an associate justice of the Supreme Court, has passed away. According to The New York Times,  she died from complications from cancer. She was 87 years old. Ginsburg was the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court and was a pioneering advocate for women’s rights,

Before being Supreme Court Justice, Ruth earned her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, went to law school at Harvard,  transferred to Columbia Law School, and graduated at the top of her class. Later, President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1980.

CNN states that in recent years, Ruth, “Served as the most senior member of the court’s liberal wing consistently delivering progressive votes on the most divisive social issues of the day, including abortion rights, same-sex marriage, voting rights, immigration, health care and affirmative action.”

“Along the way, she developed a rock star type status and was dubbed the ‘Notorious R.B.G.'”

In a statement about her death, Chief Justice John Roberts said, “Our Nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her — a tireless and resolute champion of justice.”

RBG is the subject of the biopic, On The Basis of Sex, which came out in 2018. She also had a cameo in the film.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Jane, and her son, James. Her husband, Martin, passed away in 2010.
