Tampa Airport Breaks Ground on $1.5 Billion Terminal Project
Tampa International Airport (TPA) kicked off its largest expansion to date, a huge $1.5 billion terminal, on Dec. 18, 2024. Once completed, 16 new gates will help manage the growing number of flights. Officials expect yearly passenger numbers to reach 35 million by 2037, well above the current 25 million. This fiscal year is on track to break records, with 25.2 million passengers expected through September 2024.
Opening in 2028, Airside D will feature a variety of shops and restaurants across three floors. A stunning mezzanine provides panoramic views of aircraft taking off with Tampa Bay in the distance. International flights will operate from the ground floor, while the middle level hosts shops and restaurants. Revenue is expected to jump next year – increasing $29.1 million to reach $408.6 million.
Three major companies will handle the construction: Hensel Phelps, HNTB Corporation, and Gensler. They’ll complete the design phase in late 2025.This project represents the third phase of a larger $2.5 billion renovation. With phase one completed in 2018 and phase two finishing next year, the airport is investing $95 million in infrastructure improvements for 2024. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said, “TPA is the best airport in the world.”
As work begins, Michael Stephens will take over as CEO in April 2025, becoming the airport’s first Black leader.
More workers will be needed as flight capacity grows. The airport serves one of Florida’s fastest-growing regions, making the expansion essential.
