Why You Shouldn’t Stray Away From Heartworm Positive Pets At The Humane Society of Tampa Bay
Choosing your next family pet can be difficult. A lot of loveable dogs and cats are available at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. But they’re overlooked because they’re heartworm positive. However, HSTB gives you a great reason to consider adopting a heartworm positive pet: They cover the medical costs.
Heartworm disease is a very serious disease in pets caused by mosquito bites, which means a lot of animals in Florida are affected. It can result in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets. Treatment is expensive because it requires multiple visits to the veterinarian, bloodwork, x-rays, hospitalization, and a series of injections. But the friendly folks at HSTB want to help you and your pet by covering heartworm related medical expenses for animals adopted at the shelter. Treatment is also performed at the HSTB hospital.
How does it work? Well, every heartworm positive pet starts treatment at the shelter with antibiotics. If they haven’t finished their protocol by the time you adopt them, then you will schedule an antibiotic injection for 8 weeks after their first treatment. Your pet will need second and third shots of antibiotics at least 4 weeks after their first injection. These shots are administered 24 hours apart so that means two trips back to the Humane Society Animal Hospital. You will also receive a prescribed supply of heartworm preventative medication to bring home with your dog. You will have to follow up with the Humane Society 9 months after treatment for an antigen test.
The best treatment for heartworm disease is prevention!
Whether your dog is heartworm positive or not, be sure you have a preventive treatment plan for your pet. There are many products that your vet can prescribe for your pet to help prevent heartworms. Most products are given monthly, either as a topical liquid applied on the skin or as an oral tablet.
Many dogs live a normal, happy life after receiving heartworm treatment and prevention. So don’t let that hold you back when considering adopting an animal from Humane Society Tampa Bay. Heartworm positive pets at the shelter will have a pink slip with the information of their treatment plan listed as well.
