Counties With The Highest STI Rates In Florida
The next time you’re heading out for a grand slam, you might want to reconsider before rounding third base looking for home. No, we’re not talking about your favorite Denny’s dish or a baseball game. We’re talking more about the budget knock-offs Herpules and the little Merm-aids. According to a newly released study, these counties have the highest STI rates in Florida.
How were these rankings determined?
Stacker analyzed data from the CDC to see which counties across the Sunshine State reported the highest number of sexually transmitted infections. Rankings were determined by the rate of chlamydia infections since chlamydia spreads the most throughout the nation. Gonorrhea and syphilis are used for tiebreaking situations. They used only sexually transmitted cases and did not include cases passed on through birth.
What are the counties with the highest STI rates in Florida?
- (#10) COLUMBIA COUNTY: Sitting just inside the top 10 with 589.6 cases of chlamydia per 100k people. Gonorrhea cases claim 262.8 cases per 100k people.
- (#9) HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY: If you’re playing a bit of cat and mouse across Tampa Bay, you might want to think twice. Tampa claims 8,877 cases of chlamydia per year and 4,006 cases of gonorrhea. Yikes. Might want to put Big Jim and the twins back in the cage temporarily.
- (#8) JACKSON COUNTY: Jackson County might only have 287 cases per year, but their average of 601.8 per 100k people claims a higher ratio than Tampa and therefore makes it a breeding ground of STIs. Must be something in the air in Jackson…
- (#7) ESCAMBIA COUNTY: Escambia is one of the oldest counties in Florida, but that doesn’t stop chlamydia. They have 651.4 cases per 100k people and clocks in at 2,100 total cases.
- (#6) ORANGE COUNTY: Orange County is just built different. From the loins of Orange County itself, there were 10,617 cases of chlamydia claiming 746.2 cases per 100k people. I guess we know what’s really going on around here…
- (#5) DUVAL COUNTY: Coming in a shy higher on the infection rate, Duval has 779.6 cases per 100k people with a total case number of 7,795 cases. Their gonorrhea contractions are up there with 4,422 cases per year.
- (#4) HAMILTON COUNTY: With a population of just over 13,000 people, their total case number of 115 doesn’t seem too high, but the contraction rate for chlamydia is 821.8 per 100k people landing them at the number 4 slot.
- (#3) ALACHUA COUNTY: Taking the bronze medal with 2,592 total cases of chlamydia in the year, Alachua County has an infection rate of 928.2 cases per 100k people.
- (#2) GADSDEN COUNTY: The cases might be on the lower side, but the infection rate jumps to 960.8 cases per 100k people with a total number of chlamydia cases hitting 420.
- (#1) LEON COUNTY: The beast … coming in at 1,103.4 cases per 100k people, Leon County wipes the floor with its 3,231 cases of chlamydia and 1,479 of gonorrhea.
We’re not going to give you the birds and the bees talk since we’re all adults here, but you might not want to throw caution to the wind next time you’re swinging for the fences in the counties with the highest STI rates in Florida.
