Four Of The Funniest Town Names In Florida
Florida is home to many incredible cities and beaches. It is also home to some of the funniest town names in the country. But what are the funniest town names in Florida? A travel website called Only In Our State recently took us through 15 of the funniest. “There is no shortage of funny Florida town names so let’s celebrate our Floridian weirdness with a tribute to some wacky wild towns in Florida,” they explain.
We decided to take a further look into four of the most unusual.
Christmas
Indiana has a town called Santa Claus, but we have a town that is literally called Christmas. It just gets right to the point. Christmas is in central Florida, located in Orange County. It is an unincorporated area with an estimated population of roughly 1,100 people. It’s here where you will find the largest alligator-shaped building in the country. “Swampy” is over 200 feet.
Couch
Located northeast of Panama City, Couch, Florida. It is part of a small section in the western part of the state that is actually in the central time zone. Florida is one of four states that has a town named Couch. West Virginia, Alabama, and Missouri are the others.
Sopchoppy
33 miles south of Tallahassee (and 82 miles east of Couch) is where you will find Sopchoppy. It’s name is believed to have a connection to Muskogee, the Native American language that was spoken in the area. The town highlights its abundance of nature, saying, “Nestled in the heart of the Apalachicola National Forest, we are a haven for the outdoor enthusiast.”
Two Egg
This one holds the number one spot in Only In Our State’s feature. Two Egg is also an unincorporated town. It’s located in Jackson County, along the northern part of the state. Visit Florida notes that Two Egg ‘is not really a town, “but more of a crossroads in the backwoods,” that used to be called “Allison” when it was a lumber camp. During the Christmas season, there is a traditional play put on here called, “A Two Egg Christmas” that features only residents of the town. So, we are really bringing this story full circle.

Dry Tortugas National Park
This is one of the most unique spots in the country. Dry Tortugas National Park lies west of Key West, Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. It is made up of seven small islands and that are surrounded by coral reef. The park enclosed is roughly 47,000 acres. To arrive here, you must either take a boat or a seaplane. Therefore, it is not accessible by car.
Describing its blue waters, Travel and Leisure says, “Most of it is placid, turquoise, and filled with colorful marine life, making for some of the best snorkeling in the Sunshine State.”
Devil’s Den
Another destination recognized in the report was Devil’s Den. This spring is situated in Willston, about 20 miles south of Gainesville. It is a natural cave that is privately owned. The water has been known to consistently register around 72 degrees regardless of season. One of its main attractions is scuba diving. In fact, it is also a scuba training center where diving is available seven days a week. However, you must have proper certification as it the water has a maximum depth of 54 feet. Their are four lodging cabins at Devil’s Den. The property contains 120 feet of surface diameter.
Also mentioned on Travel and Leisure’s list was Crater Lake in Oregon, Jenny Lake in Wyoming, and Tenaya Lake and Lake Tahoe in California. Havasu Falls in Arizona was the spotlighted waterfall. Finally, as for beaches with the brightest blues, Flamenco Beach in Puerto Rico and Lanikai Beach in Hawaii were among the best.
These two Florida locations that have the bluest water in America were the only east coast spots to make this feature.
