Remember back in the day how coveted bootlegs were? Now with sites like YouTube, so many live performances have surfaced that otherwise would have sat in someone’s attic. As you get ready to see Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road performance at Amalie Arena Sunday, take a listen to this! This recording is said to have come from a performance on Elton John’s second tour on May 29, 1971 at Curtis Hixon Hall.
Curtis Hixon Hall was an indoor arena at 600 Ashley Drive. It was torn down in 1993 and now a park. In 1971, Elton only had one really big hit under his belt – “Your Song,” which hit #8 in the U.S. Elton filled the set list with a few covers. The following year, Elton’s career would really take off with big hits like “Rocket Man” and “Crocodile Rock.”
The set list:
Ballad of a Well-Known Gun
Friends
Can I Put You On
Country Comfort
The King Must Die
Honky Tonk Women (A Rolling Stones cover)
Mercedes Benz (a Janis Joplin cover)
Your Song
Take Me to the Pilot
