You might be surprised to find out that Americans aren’t buying as much clothing as they did in years past. When you look back to the nineties, Americans consumed about 40 garments per person each year and by the end of the decade that number was up to about 65 pieces of clothing per person. After two recessions, clothing consumption dropped and hasn’t gained significant steam since.
What factors are to blame? First off, millennials prefer experiences over things. And when buyers do spring for “things,” they have to include iPhones in the budget. Paying for technology in 2018 is, in some cases, more costly than it was years ago.
