We've heard of certain buildings being haunted in Ybor and Downtown Tampa, but the spookiest town in Florida is Cassadaga.
Sure, downtown Tampa is home to Tampa Theatre, which is allegedly inhabited by at least one ghost. And Ybor City offers ghost tours of spooky spots. But Cassadaga is the real spooky town in the Sunshine State. When you think of spooky cities, maybe places like Salem, Massachusetts comes to mind. You might be a Floridian who has never even heard of Cassadaga. What makes Cassadaga so spooky?
Well, first let me give you a little background about Cassadaga. It's in Volusia County. It's just a bit southeast of DeLand. And it was established back in 1895. It's what's known as a spiritualist camp. It only holds about 55 homes on 55 acres of land.
The publication Far & Wide came up with a list of the spookiest cities around the country. Cassadaga was the only city/town listed in Florida.
What Makes Cassadaga The Spookiest Town?
You can imagine what makes Cassadaga so spooky is that there are so many mediums, astrologers, and psychics there. Folks come from all over to get their fortunes told, to talk to a deceased loved one or get their palm read.
If you go to the Cassadaga website, it reads: "We, as Spiritualists, welcome you, no matter what your religion of origin is or where you are on your spiritual path: a believer, a skeptic, or simply curious."
Finally, it's not that Cassadaga, itself, is necessarily haunted or has a lot of ghosts. But the city definitely has a number of people living and working there who are trying to communicate with ghosts.
