Why Does Coke Zero Taste So Much Better Than Diet Coke?
It’s been a question I’ve pondered for years. I finally posed it to listeners on the show yesterday and got some interesting answers. Why does Coke Zero taste so much better than Diet Coke?
It’s the same company. They both have no calories. So why is it that they taste so different?
My theory was that Coke Zero might have cinnamon in it. Coke Zero is so close to regular Coca Cola in taste. I never feel like I’m depriving myself. The sugary sweet lover in me is satisfied. But if you offer me a Diet Coke, I’m just going to pass.
Coke Zero Taste Difference Explained
When I threw this question out to listeners yesterday, I new darn well there are thousands of Coca Cola employees here in the Tampa area. I knew none of them would speak on the record officially. But as I hoped, a few Coke workers and former staff members chimed in.
The most logical answer was given by a few of them. They said Diet Coke uses aspartame. But when I looked on the back of my can of Coke Zero, I noticed Coke Zero has aspartame too. So why does it taste so much better? The callers said that Coke Zero does have aspartame, but the difference is that it also has other sweeteners. That mix is what changes the flavor so drastically.
Another Theory
The first call we took on the topic seemed like a logical answer too. A Diet Coke fan said since the soda has been around so much longer, many are just partial to the original. We all remember the fury that was caused when “New Coca Cola” was introduced years ago. People revolted and “Classic Coke” became all the rage.
Other Zeros
I like all the zeros better. I even like Pepsi Zero way more than Diet Pepsi. Dr. Pepper Zero tastes almost as good as regular Dr. Pepper. I guess I’m just a Zero kinda guy.
