Man Fined For Using Umbrella On Pinellas Beach
What’s a beachgoer to do when they’re just trying to get a little shade? Pop open the umbrella is the obvious answer, but that’s not allowed on one local beach.
There’s a new ordinance in Bellair Shore. They do not allow umbrellas, tents or canopies on the beach.
Our friends at ABC Action News spoke with Pedro “Pete” Redero. He received a $116 ticket for having an umbrella on the beach.
Pedro explained his reason for fearing sun exposure, “I’ve had several cancer spots taken off of my face.”
On June 12th, Redero set up his beach spot, which included opening his umbrella. His friends put up canopies. Late in the afternoon, they were approached by two Pinellas County Deputies approached them.
He explained, “The officers (deputies) came and told us we had to take the umbrella down. I said ‘why is it that we have to take the umbrella down’ and he said ‘it’s an ordinance here that you can’t have the umbrella up.’ Then, they went right ahead and gave me a ticket.”
The ticket was for “having an umbrella on the beach within the city limits.”
“I’ve had my umbrella for years and years and I’ve used it in different places and beaches. It’s 7 feet wide and is a regular beach or pool umbrella. It’s nothing outrageous,” Redero said.
This ordinance was put in place in Bellaire Shore in 2020. Deputies have been issuing more ordinances as of late. According to Redero’s citation, he had been previously warned about his umbrella.
We heard from some texters today on the MJ Morning Show and were told that the residents of this area don’t want their views obstructed by the umbrellas even though Bellair Shore representatives are claiming it’s for the “safety and welfare of the community.”
