Unpleasant South Tampa Smell Explained By Fire Rescue
Did you smell something odd in the air in South Tampa? We now know what it is.
There have been calls to Tampa Fire Rescue about a smell in South Tampa. They’ve looked into it and here’s the explanation.
The smell? It’s mercaptan. What’s that, you ask? According to chemservice.com, mercaptan is a gas added to colorless, odorless natural gas so that leaks are more easily detected. It’s described by chemservice.com as smelling like rotting cabbage or garlic.
Tampa Fire Rescue Tweeted that there is no current leak. The mercaptan is coming from soil saturated with the chemical at a propane farm that is in the process of having its old tanks removed. There is no danger from the situation.
Tampa Electric Company is aware of the situation.
