January 22 is only a week away. Here’s what you should know about the changes coming, especially for those making a call from a landline. Remember those?

• What is the new Tampa area code?

  It's going to be 656.

• Wait. When did this all happen?

  It was approved back in March of 2020 back when Yanni was still a Bolt. Yup, that long ago.

• What cities/towns are going to use 656?

  Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, Valrico, Land O’ Lakes, Oldsmar, Thonotosassa, Town ‘n’ Country, and Zephyrhills.
• Can I keep my 813 number?

  Yes. If you have an existing 813 area code number, it won't change.

• Why is there a new Tampa area code?

  Quite simply, there are too few 813 numbers left.

• Can I still get an 813 number?

  Share

  Hurry. New phone customers who sign up for service starting February 21 might not have a choice and will most likely get assigned a 656 number.
• What if I move?

  The Florida Public Service Commission says customers might get assigned the new area code if you move your service.

• What if they run out of 656 numbers?

  They don't expect that to happen for at least 30 years. This is the first new area code for Tampa. 813 was introduced in 1953, when this photo was taken.

• Any changes for Pinellas?

  Not yet.
• What’s this about 10 digit dialing?

  Yup... with cell phones we're used to it but if you live within those towns listed above, you'll need to dial all 10 numbers starting January 22... which will be a real pain if you still have one of these.

• Is it just Tampa getting the new area code?

  No. Palm Beach and Miami are both likely getting new ones too.
