The northern lights streak through the sky over horse barn in Mercer, Maine on May 10, 2024. The aurora borealis, commonly referred to as the northern lights, are electrically charged particles that are interacting with gases in outer space. This recent display was the strongest seen since 2003 rating a G5 on the geomagnetic scale. (Photo by Michael Seamans/Getty Images)
It wasn't easy to see the show in the sky over Florida. Northern states definitely had the edge in viewing the aurora this weekend. The natural light display showed brilliant colors and patterns that drew gasps from those who got to witness it. But for most of us in the Tampa area, we'll have to just enjoy these photos snapped by some really talented photographers around the world.
These Northern Lights photos to me are far more exciting to me than all that to do over the eclipse a few weeks ago. You didn't have to hunt down some special glasses And you didn't have to be along a specific line to view it. Many few hundreds if not thousands of miles to see the eclipse. I wouldn't do it for the eclipse, but I would to get some Northern Lights photos like this.
As a kid who slept through most of science class, the explanation of how this phenomenon happens is a little mind boggling to me. But northern lights are "disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by the solar wind," according to Wikipedia. Sure. Sounds good to me.
Did you snap any Northern Lights photos? It's tough here in Florida since we don't have much elevation. Tag me @GenoRadio and I'll share your photos here.
