A bicycle rider in Ybor City was alarmed when she saw a man jump out of his car, grab a rooster and take off. It happened so fast that her husband didn’t even notice. She barely did. It shook them both up. “How cruel!” you might think.
The husband took to the message board website Reddit and asked Tampa readers if this is a common occurrence. Do people really kidnap the Ybor roosters? Over the past few years, many have complained about the noise they make. Was someone doing this to rid Ybor of the roosters? Was it some sort of sick prank?
No. It was none of those things. There was no animal cruelty involved here. In fact, it was quite the opposite. It was actually someone doing something nice. REALLY nice.
Not long after the husband posted the message, someone replied. The mystery was solved and it was a “plot twist” he didn’t expect. Turns out this was the work of the Ybor Chickens Society and the Ybor Misfits Microsanctuary. The organization says they received messages about a blind rooster that looked to be in bad shape near the Ritz. The rooster that was “abducted” was taken by one of their members who observed that the rooster had an eye infection. They say in full daylight, the rooster’s pupils were dilated. They say they took the rooster in and are now teaching it how to eat and drink without vision. [More: Reddit]
