Publix: “No pets allowed” Sign Sparks Debate
A Tampa reddit post is prompting a debate over those who try to bring their pet into Publix while they shop. The post has a photo of a sign posted near the entry of a Publix supermarket with giant letters that read “No pets allowed.” Just under that it reads “This includes emotional support animals. Only service animals are permitted.” One user said the sign is posted at the Lutz Publix location.
The sign goes on to explain exactly what a service animal is:
“Under federal law, service animals are dogs or miniature horses trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities. Non-service animals are not allowed in grocery stores by the FDA. Dogs, pets and other animals whose sole function is to provide comfort, companionship, or emotional support do not qualify as service animals and are not permitted in Publix, even with a doctor’s note. Misrepresenting your pet as a service animal negatively impacts the quality of life and independence for service animal users. Under Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia law, it is illegal to fraudulently misrepresent your pet as a service animal.”
The sign is causing much debate on the message boards at reddit. Many are praising Publix for taking the stance. Have you seen this at your Publix? Has it become a problem? Share your thoughts with me by tagging @GenoRadio.
