St. Petersburg And Clearwater Considering Gondolas
There’s been ongoing consideration of a new transportation system connecting parts of St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
Now, proposals are being requested to study the feasibility of aerial gondolas. Previously, the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority (TBARTA) studied various transportation plans for Pinellas County.
There are currently two routes being examined. One is a gondola connecting downtown Clearwater to Clearwater Beach. The other is a route from an area in downtown St. Pete connecting the Tropicana Field area and the St. Pete Pier.
If the result of the study shows positive results, the next step could be an environmental assessment. This could lead to a contract for a design or contract to build aerial gondolas.
What do you think of gondola systems around Pinellas? Would you use them? Do we have enough tourists to make them cost effective? If you’ve been to Walt Disney World, you may have seen their “Skyliner” that connects two parks to several resorts. It has been very popular there. Perhaps it could be as useful in Pinellas County.
