Video: Rare Albino Dolphin Spotted Near St. Petersburg
An albino dolphin calf was seen in a canal by a lucky man who managed to catch it on video.
The man wasn’t aware what he was seeing was truly a rare opportunity. The calf was swimming with an adult dolphin near Shore Acres Mini Park.
New to the area, the man was just happy to see dolphins swimming by. When you take a closer look at the calf, you can see it appears to be white. Normally, dolphins appear to be grey.
Just how rare is this sighting, if it the calf is in fact albino? There have only been three reports of sightings of albino bottlenose dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico.
It is possible that the dolphin is not albino, that it may just be pale, but there’s no question the one in the video is a much lighter shade than its mother.
According to the NOAA program administrator, the mother and calf may be new to this area. There’s a photo catalog of the dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico, which can be identified by the markings on their dorsal fins.
