Facts On Big, Parachuting Spiders Rumored To Be Coming To Florida
After a report from the University of Georgia, rumors have spread quickly of an invasive species of spiders. The report suggests the arachnids may be Florida-bound. Here’s what you should know.
The rumors of these spiders colonizing the area are way overstated. Fully grown, the Joro spider is about the size of your palm. Though that’s a pretty good size, they have very small fangs, so they’re unlikely to cause much damage to anyone. Young Joro spiders release silk that can catch a breeze, their parachute, that can carry them through the air. They aren’t going to fly through the skies into our state. They likely came to the United States hitching a ride in shipping containers.
New research suggests colorful jorō spiders are hardier than thought, but there’s no evidence they’re a danger to humans or ecosystems https://t.co/godqq4ozQr pic.twitter.com/D0sTtY8SOq

The Joro spiders are native to Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan. They seem to prefer cooler conditions. They’ve been found in Georgia, and have moved west into Alabama, north into North and South Carolina, and Tennessee. Florida, for most of the year, doesn’t have the most suitable climate for these spiders. The likelihood of the Joro spiders parachuting into Florida is not what some are suggesting. So you can relax and be reassured that they won’t be taking over Florida, and most importantly, the Tampa Bay area, any time soon.
