Great White Shark Pings Off Pinellas Coast
There are sharks, turtles and other sea life that are carrying trackers through the world’s oceans. Ocearch.org keeps track of these and can show the paths these animals follow around the world. One shark pinged off Pinellas County, west of St. Pete Beach.
The studies have shown great white sharks visiting the Florida coastline. Although we don’t often see them coming close to the Tampa Bay area, this one has made it much closer than some other great white sharks. Her name is Rose, as given by Ocearch.org. She’s nearly 10 1/2 feet long and weighs 600 lbs.
The ping from Rose came from about 35 miles west of St. Pete Beach over the weekend. That’s following a path that began October 3, 2020. Ocearch.org shows her having traveled from just off Nova Scotia, Canada, to the Gulf of Mexico over about a year-and-a-half. Rose has come close to the Pinellas Coast this week after having been close to the Florida Panhandle near Apalachicola.
White shark Rose is currently off of Saint Petersburg, Florida! We met this female, juvenile white shark in October 2020 and she's traveled over 9,000 miles since. Other great white sharks that have pinged in the gulf include Scot, a male over 12 feet long and over 1600 lbs., Hudson, a 5-foot long male, Ferg, an 11-foot 8-inch male weighing in at over 870 lbs and Sable, a female measuring in at 11-feet 6-inches and weighing over 800 lbs.
