Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Mail Theft Scheme
Victims are having mail and property stolen in a fraud scheme in Hillsborough County and across the Tampa Bay area.
Have you ever had your identification stolen? The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office investigated what began as mail theft.
The investigation was into bank fraud and mail theft. The Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Section found an ongoing fraud scheme. Warrants were executed Thursday and suspects have been identified. What were they doing? Criminals had been finding and stealing forms of ID, such as credit cards and social security cards.
In a release from HCSO.com, Sheriff Chad Chronister said,
“These suspects are linked to multiple cases not only here in Hillsborough County, but all across Tampa Bay. They exploited their victims by going straight to their mailboxes, stealing their mail, and taking their personal information to access their bank accounts and spend their hard-earned money. It’s abhorrent behavior and here at HCSO, we will work to protect hardworking citizens from this type of exploitation.”
The search warrant found evidence of ID theft, but it didn’t stop there. Investigators also found stolen firearms, laptops, auto parts, lawn equipment, plus other items. Three suspects have been arrested.
The three suspects face a mix of charges. Those charges include: possession of personal ID, credit card theft, grand theft, burglary, credit card fraud, trespass and resisting an officer without violence. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating.
